A Vitamin Supplement
is vital for your Natural Health

A lot of people think that a vitamin supplement is unnecessary. They believe that they get all the nutrition that they need from the food that they eat. Once upon a time this was a very valid argument, and many doctors over the age of 35 will still tell you this. However, these days younger doctors coming out of medical school are advocating the use of a quality nutritional supplement to make up for the short fall in our diet. Why are they doing this?

For starters, natural health, naturopathy, homeopathy and other natural health modalities are being offered to medical students at University. Many of them are starting to incorporate them into their medicinal practice alongside modern drugs.

There is a lot of evidence to support a daily vitamin supplement as well as mineral supplements. One reason is the increase in stress in our lives. When we are under regular stress we not only use up vital nutrients to cope with the stress but this is the time that we tend to neglect our bodies by not eating as well as we should.

Another reason lies in modern farming practices. Our farmers are a hard working bunch, but to break even in this cut-throat world of competition they too have to produce higher yielding, faster growing crops or product to keep up. They do this by a variety of different methods such as applying pesticides, applying artificial fertilisers, and even Genetic Modification.

Over cropping their fields also depletes the soils of minerals. Our grandparents used to leave a field to lie crop-free for a season or grow alfalfa and beans on it to replenish the nutrients taken out of the soil by the previous harvest.

Evidence supports vitamin supplement usage. A nutritional comparison between 1948 and 1991 by the CSIRO (1) “The Diminishing Nutritional Values of Australian Grown Fruit and Vegetables” found that in 1948 Broccoli contained over 150mg of Magnesium, compared with 1991 when it was found that Broccoli contained less than 50mg. Apples were another study conducted. In 1948 Apples contained more than 25mg of Vitamin C, whereas in 1991 they contained merely 5mg.

So, even if we are eating as many fruits and vegetables as our grandparents, it is highly unlikely that we are getting the same level of vitamins and minerals that they were.

Most people take a vitamin supplement to contribute to overall health maintenance. It makes sense to look after yourself on a daily basis as a preventative measure, especially if you aren’t consistently eating a balanced diet. Why wait until your body shows signs of reduced health before you take action? Natural health supplements help to bridge any gaps in your diet, filling in your nutrient requirements when your diet is just not enough.
